Sunday 1st April -

I was trying to contrive an elaborate April Fool gag for my blog this morning, however after much deliberation I came to the conclusion that it would probably be a daft idea, and perhaps I shouldn't bother! How do we disect yesterday? From the top I guess. The Treble was poor, the NAP was too far off the pace and found trouble when trying to pick up, the NB won nicely. The third leg of the treble travelled like a long odds-on shot then found absolutely nothing off the bridle. The Lucky 15 we had a 6/1 winner and unluckily 2 x thirds in races of less than 8 contestants. The other one was just poor! And the placepot went down in the second race!
Elsewhere we picked up 7 winners, which in essence is a pretty poor result, I hope for double figures at least on a Saturday. But I guess there will be some transition between the Jumps and the Flat. Hopefully it will pick up quickly.

Dubai World Cup, The Lincoln, plus flat racing everywhere the eye can see. I posted my Lincoln Armoury last night on Twitter, I'll pop them down again on here. I'm adding the placed %ages today. What I intend to do with that is use the highest one each day in a straightforward 1pt placepot and see how we go. Today there will be 2 meetings without a %age, as for one reason or another I have not recorded those figures since 31/10/11 when I began. We completely wiped out on Treble and Lucky yesterday. However, Hi Dancer winning at 11/1 eased the pain of the day a little. Shall we get on.

Morning all, those who follow me through twitter will be pleased to hear that your timelines won't be filled with my ramblings today, as I have a day off work and am taking the family to the Zoo. Hoping to come home with all three kids, but the odds aren't great on the zoo withholding one of my monkeys! A small profit made yesterday at SP, I'm quite happy with that, was even happier to find I backed O Crotaigh at 15/2, won at 7/2! I don't put prices on this blog because when I write/publish it is quite a chaotic time and the prices change before my eyes. My advice is, if you choose to back one of mine, ensure you have best odds guaranteed. Right, moving on swiftly, I'm quietly confident about my treble today, chances are all three will run like broomsticks but I think they have a good chance all of them.
Another feature I'm going to add is this, my alert horses will be put in italic, I'm doing this more to be informative. When I have alert horses I don't look at the race, ultimately there is a chance 1 or 2 will be better, but if i prefer one to my alert and my alert wins I'd be pig-sick, that is all.

Yet more profit yesterday, that's 3 decent days on the bounce. which is nice. Can I just politely ask that if you enjoy what I do that you click an ad from time to time, they are provided by Google, so should be safe. That is how I get paid for doing this, I am not anywhere near the sort of level to be asking for payment and most likely never will be, but a little click here and there would be lovely. Another good profitable day yesterday and we hit the winners target with 1 to spare. It's Monday today, so I'm not so optimistic, I've been setting the target at 33%, but in honour of Monday, I would be very happy with about 25% and 5/6 winners.

Thursday 15th March - BIG BUCKS DAY!!!

I make no secret that I believe Big Bucks to be pound for pound the best horse in training, he is a monster. Only flat enthusiasts could really challenge that statement at present, and if Frankel is still demolishing group 1 fields in 3/4 years time then I'll hand the accolade over. We all know that won't happen as his fluids will be worth far too much! I think that is the appeal with NH over flat. I prefer betting on the flat, but the NH provides the spectacle, and the horses that you can grow fond of over years, ok The Tatling is one that bucked the trend, but the top flat horses tend to be put away quite soon. Listen to me rambling on, you only want to know whats going to win today, on evidence of the week so far, I don't know. lol. But I have studied, for the most part I've stayed true to my initial thoughts in the blog entitled Cheltenham Day 3, 1 major absentee is RUBI LIGHT, but I already have a bit on at 6/1 so no real need going in again. I'm going in 3 handed each race today, with the biggest bet being the first named selection. Fingers crossed.

Cheltenham Day 3

Hopefully the bookies will be cowering for cover by now and restricting all our bets. Ha Ha. Day 3 only survives for me because it has a banker. With my record on the other races on the Thursday, I'd probably not bother betting, but luckily I know I can always get it back.

JEWSON NOVICE CHASE


This is a pretty tough one that is very open at the top end. Obviously PEDDLARS CROSS has to be respected, having swerved the Arkle for this. He did win over this sort of trip as a novice hurdler and it may well be the furture for him rather than the frantic 2 milers. Paul Nicholl's CRISTAL BONUS has made a terrific start to his chasing career with 2 wins from 2 starts, I guess the only issue with him is what he has beaten, but these Novices are always progressing and he will be a big player. SIR DES CHAMPS, the unbeaten Irish raider, he would probably be my pick for this if I'm to be truly honest. He won at the festival last year in the Martin Pipe race and since then has shown he can scoot away to win, or win in a scrap. The race he won in a scrap, he was hampered, switched and still got home. 2 that will be put out in front and try to do the business are Martin Keighley's CHAMPION COURT, who looked very strong when holding off SOLIX at the track in January. Since unseating at Perth when every chance of winning on return from a break he has only bean beaten by GRAND CRUS, JOIN TOGETHER and MOSSLEY, not bad. The other one is ZAYNAR. on his day he can be good, the only problem is his day doesn't seem to end in 'y'. I think he is an attractive price solely because he generally does ok at Cheltenham and if he jumps well he won't be far off the winner.

PERTEMPS FINAL


Not one really to get involved in until the day, and all runners are known, unless you've been following one of these all year, and I haven't. Well that's a bit of a lie. I had a decent bet for SONOFVIC for the RSA, and now he appears to be going here. Another that I might be interested in if lining up is David Pipe's POOLE MASTER, he is on an upward curve and could be very well treated for this. A tough race, the only pointers readily available are to stay away from French Breds and 5yo's, other than that, wait for thursday morning and pick the one or two that you like.

RYANAIR CHASE


Potentially one of the most competitive races at the festival, alongside the Jewson. Generally here they need Course and if possible Festival form. Also Stamina plays a big part as does ability, no horse rated lower than 156 has won this. RIVERSIDE THEATRE will most likely go off favourite but I can't have that, he has only run once at Cheltenham and didn't run anywhere near as well as expected. RUBI LIGHT is one on my list, third in this race last year, his form has held up in between and comes in well having blown away a Grade 2 field at Gowran lto. The other one is unlikely to run in this but if CAPTAIN CHRIS lines up I think he will win, and at NRNB terms the price is hugely generous.

WORLD HURDLE


I've only really been betting on horses properly for about 5-6 years, in that time I've backed 2 horses only in this race, INGLIS DREVER and BIG BUCKS. BIG BUCKS will win again, but I fear I may need to pick a new one next year. I will go on whichever comes second for this year. I'm going to put it out there and say it will be a French bred 1-2-3 in this. BIG BUCKS to win, with second and third any 2 from SO YOUNG, THOUSAND STARS and DYNASTE. The latter pushed BIG BUCKS for a little while in the Cleeve Hurdle, and has plenty of room to progress. The other 2 look most likely to enjoy the step up in trip than OSCAR WHISKY. And with Irish bred horses having such a poor record I would be happy to Place Lay OW.

A graveyard for favourites and horses up the top end of the weights. Another race to wait for the day. Although Ferdy Murphy's DIVERS makes appeal as he saves all his best racing for Cheltenham, and this is looking like the preferred race now for Venetia's NICEONEFRANKIE, Venetia has won this race twice in recent years.

KIM MUIR CHALLENGE CUP


Older horses with stamina win this race, it is also a breeding ground for Grand National winners, so that is the type of horse we are looking for. BECAUSEICOULDN'TSEE i actually done for the National last year, my hopes and dreams came down with him and Davy at the second fence. He last took his chance at the festival 2 years ago when finishing second, and had a decent spin over hurdles in a race he could never win lto. Phillip Hobbs' MOSTLY BOB also comes in here in good nick, have put away former National winner MON MOME away last time out at the track. And finally one more for luck is that man Ferdy Murphy again with THE HOLLINWELL. He's a pretty consistent sort when getting round unscathed and worth a little each way.

Cheltenham Day 2

Right after smashing up Day 1, we get a rest financially. Much more tentative staking today.

DIAMOND JUBILEE NH CHASE CUP


HARRY THE VIKING leads the market here, and with good reason too, he just keeps winning his races. He doesn't rip fields to shreds and win by lengths, he doesn't even look that comfortable when on the bridle, but he does get his nose in front when it counts, a couple of races he's been beat, and still got back up and won, that willingness to get there will hold him in good stead for a race like this, BUT, I'm going to take him on with Rebecca Curtis' TEAFORTHREE. In my opinion this one looks like he will stay all day. The only real blot on his copybook was from his race with the great GRAND CRUS where something clearly went wrong, as shown when he dispatched a small field with ease on his next run. He also ran down JOIN TOGETHER just to be held off by about a length a few starts further back. You will see both of those mentioned further down this page. One I'll put up each way is Lucinda Russell's BLENHEIM BROOK. This one is entered into the JLT, this race and the Kim Muir, I think wherever they send him he has a big chance of making the frame and at around 25's it is worth the risk, especially as most firms are NRNB now.

NEPTUNE NOVICES HURDLE


Often one of the most open of the big races at the festival, favourites don't have the best of times as a rule, which could be bad news for followers of Nicky Henderson's SIMONSIG. Personally I like the horse. He is a very nice looking individual and has no end of stamina. My worry for him is if he comes across something that can throw some pace into the ring at the death like FINGAL BAY did to him, on that occasion he found little off the bridle after travelling like a winner from a long way out. Willie Mullins SOUS LES CIEUX makes decent appeal at 8/1 (B365). I think he will relish the step up in trip. BOSTON BOB and MONKSLAND have the danger of the ground being too quick for them having only really raced on soft or worse and Cheltenham generally holds out as Good to Soft. BATONNIER for Alan King looks in good nick having landed a C&D Grade 2 in January beating the very good BROADBACKBOB in the process. That man Mullins has another very good one in MAKE YOUR MARK. This one looked very very very impressive on his first two starts before struggling in the mud behind BOSTON BOB lto. He will prefer the quicker ground.
The best chance of a very rare British Bred winner of this race is John Ferguson's COTTON MILL. John Ferguson has really taken the NH world by storm sending his well bred middle distance flat horses over the sticks. If he doesn't have a winner over the festival I will be shocked. His Grade 2 Warwick win was given a nice boost yesterday by the impressive AMBION WOOD.

RSA CHASE


GRAND CRUS. Does he go here or the Gold Cup. I'm guessing the decision will be made as late as possible to keep everyone guessing. The smart move would be to stay in this and win. But the owners would love their colours in the showpiece. If he's good enough then run him the Gold Cup. Long Run is not a fluent jumper, Kauto is still touch and go to run at all, why not? I'm hoping he does go to the Gold Cup because my biggest winner of the festival Antepost is JOIN TOGETHER. He isn't without his quirks, he went wrong in the Bartlett last year, and fell on chase debut this season, but he has gotten it together to beat TEAFORTHREE and then lto he destroyed 2 very good animals in MOSSLEY and CHAMPION COURT. It is very likely that he will be Ruby's ride for this race, at least I do hope so. You can still get 7/1 from Paddy Power and Boylesports and provided you get on before final decs there will be no Rule 4 if Grand Crus does get lifted. I'll be honest I can't see too much getting close to these two.

QUEEN MOTHER CHAMPION CHASE


This race is really quite open. The SIZING EUROPE / BIG ZEB rivalry continues. But SIZING put ZEB away quite comfortably in Ireland last time out. The Arkle winner generally does well in this race but CAPTAIN CHRIS is Gold Cup bound so therefore FINIANS RAINBOW has to be thrown into the equation. My worry with FR though is that he hasn't won at the Festival despite being well fancied. SIZING EUROPE would be a rare winner into double figures of age. I might take a chance with SOMERSBY, although he has yet to win in 4 visits to Cheltenham, which is worrying. I'm not going heavy on this race. SIZING and ZEB are the class but trends suggest they are getting old. FINIANS is expensive to follow, so why not just have a play at the value.

CORAL CUP


This is a very open race, and best to study on the day. It pays to be lower down the weights as only one winner has carried more than 11-3. Generally they need to have shown winning form within the last few races.  5 to 7 year olds have the best record and the market is a useful guide with 70% of winners coming from the top 6 in the betting. Another race that's best left until decs are announced. As a guide good flat horses have done well in the past, also Fillies have a good record as do French Bred Horses. VENDOR is the current favourite, and while he is very good he does have a propensity to err. I'm not going to bet a penny on this race until Wednesday but two I'd like to see line up are KAZLIAN and JACKIES SOLITAIRE. Available at 14 and 33 respectively if you did fancy a bite.KAZLIAN looks very progressive with much more to give, I think he will turn into another very good thing for David Pipe. And JS for the impressive Anthony Honeyball is a game filly she has competed admirably in some very good races, 3rd to BABY MIX who is fancied for the Triumph 2 starts ago then almost upset the very good ALASI last time out. Her jockey Rachael Green is a very good horseman (horseperson?) she is patient and reads races and her horses very very well and I would love to see her and Anthony given the credit they deserve for a fantastic operaton on the biggest stage at Cheltenham.

CHAMPION BUMPER


Generally 4yo don't do well, the Irish do, and you have to look for the ones that have won a proper bumpy bumper with a large field of runners. The Warren Greatrex pair of CHAIN REACTOR and CIRCULAR QUAY could well be interesting at big prices. Also I have a decent bit on POPULATION from John Ferguson although it looks as though NEW YEARS EVE has surpassed that one as stable first choice for the race. Also Willie Mullins is likely to have a strong hand and beware that Ruby will ride the second string as Patrick Mullins will be given first choice for this race. Also Jessica Harrington's JEZKI looked very good in Ireland last time out. THE NEW ONE from the Twiston Davies' won a nice event last time as well. Have a bet on the day, and keep your eyes peeled on twitter for a tip from Clive @kingofbumpers, he is truly what it says on the tin. Good Luck

The Festival kicks off as always with the famous roar sending the Novices off in the Supreme. So that is obviously where I shall start.

SUPREME NOVICE HURDLE


My money has been down for a long time on Jessica Harrington's STEPS TO FREEDOM. The 6yo Gelding has really shown a propensity to Hurdling, unbeaten in 3 starts, putting away some fancied sorts at the time. The form hasn't been franked too highly but the race trends are generally positive, and the way he clipped up the hill to land the Grade 2 sharps hurdle back in November was really game. The trainer stated then that he would be put away until this race. DARLAN is many peoples favourite, but for me bridle monkeys rarely get the job done at Cheltenham. If you need somebody to literally carry your horse up the hill then of course AP is certainly your man, but I'm just not sure if the horse has enough and if the price sinks to 2/1 or shorter I'd be more than comfortable laying him. Also negative for him is that only 3, 5yo have won this versus 7 of their elders. One to possibly chuck in at a price is Dermot Weld's GALLILEO'S CHOICE, only Sous Les Cieux has beaten him under NH code, who himself may well make an appearance in this blog down the line. Blue Square and Paddy go 8/1 for this chap, I know a lot bigger was available until recently. The Key Stats are 6or7yo, Irish Bred, Irish Trained. Those 2 fit the bill nicely. Staking, hmm,

RACING POST ARKLE


Over the years favourites and the Arkle haven't seen eye to eye. Aiming to buck the trend this year is Nicky Henderson's SPRINTER SACRE. The problem I have with this one is he has been asked for an effort 3 times, initially he got home in his bumper, but the second time he was turned over by Fracati Park at Ascot, and the third times was up the hill in last years Spureme Novice, granted he made a small error at the last which allowed himself to be headed but AL FEROF left him behind under a typically well timed Ruby Walsh ride. I cannot be having the favourite at odds on, personally I think that is insulting to the other horses entered. My main fancy is Nicholls' AL FEROF. He jumps beautifully and the hill will pose no problem for him as evidenced last year. Last time out he was beaten by Somersby, who on his day has pushed Master Minded, and Finians Rainbow, at a time when Mr Nicholls horses generally run a little below form. CUE CARD is an interesting one in this race, he was the supposed hotpot for the supreme last year and never did the business, I don''t know if he's good enough for this, he most likely isn't, but he will ensure that there is a pace on and that could play into the hands of MENORAH. Much has been made of Phillip Hobbs' geldings jumping. However he hasn't actually been given a true test in a true field. With a bit of clip in the race it could well bring the best out in him and with a fluent round Dickie Johnson will put him right there at the business end.
So how do we stake this race.

HURRICANE FLY will win this doing cartwheels, even following the trends 6 to 8 year olds, that win last time out and have Festival form and come in with a run within 2 months prior. I've narrowed it down to the top 3 in the betting. The betting is right. I really can't think what to say, the FLY is a class act, handles the hill and is believedly in better nick than last year. Pick BINOCULAR or ZARKANDAR for the Forecast on the day.

I'm unoriginal but I cannot look past Willie Mullins' SCOTSIRISH. The Irish trainers will dominate this, there is very little point backing anything trained in England, no matter how speculatively. I feel the selection would have comfortably won last time he contested a X-Country event here at Cheltenham but for the leaders all taking the wrong course. GARDE CHAMPETRE would be a popular winner but I feel his days are pretty much numbered and the main challenge should come from stablemate UNCLE JUNIOR and last years winner SIZING AUSTRALIA.

Right, essentially the trend for this race is, if your name is QUEVEGA you have a very good chance of winning, as she has won 3/5 runnings of the event! She will be many peoples banker of the Festival and she will be our biggest bet of the first day at least! As for the places, Dermot Weld's UNACCOMPANIED should seal second, but third is up for grabs, and I'd put it down to 1 of the 3 old rivals VIOLIN DAVIS, KENTFORD GREY LADY or OUR GIRL SALLEY. The former represents the current value so we'll side there.

Good Morning all, another good day yesterday, although the treble was unfortunate, 1st, 2nd and crap. The Lucky 15 returned 12pts profit by virtue of an 8/1 winner and 2 non runners.
