Sunday 10th July - Well done Hayley

Hayley Turner has long been considered as the best female jockey around, recently the emergence of Cathy Gannon has made a little battle between the pair as to who finishes higher up the table. However, yesterday, a truly fabulous ride on Dream Ahead showed the general public that Hayley is one of the best jockeys around full stop. Her race craft was delightful, always keeping the horse in touch, she never panicked. The gap appeared for her and she magnificently steered the horse through it to claim the first standalone Group 1 win for a female jockey ever. If it was Frankie, Ryan Moore, Spencer or Fallon delivering that ride we would be waxing lyrical about a "classic" ride from a top jock, that is how Hayley's ride yesterday should be treated. I believe it will have opened the door for more female jockeys to come through and balance out the numbers and hopefully top trainers will look up and see that they can book these ladies with confidence. Obviously Miss Turner and Miss Gannon are out in front, a long way at that, but there are some very capable girls out there who deserve the bookings, Milzarek, Ryan, Scott, Pike, Harrison etc... I'm sorry if I missed you out, I'm just waffling a bit. I think, given the rides, Hayley or Cathy would be genuine contenders for the jockeys title and with some exciting young men coming through also, Buick, De Souza, Morris, Barzalona etc... there are very exciting times ahead for our sport. The whole racing world sat up last year when Paul Hanagan broke into racings elite and landed the jockeys title and we could well see a new name on that title this year with De Souza firing in winners and sitting in 3rd place, the exciting Will Buick in 6th, both Hayley and Cathy sit comfortably inside the top 20. This group 1 win could land some big rides for the girls and push them towards the top 10. However, good as that was, the best ride of the day was Martin Lane carrying my cash aboard Noble Citizen to ensure a profit before the afternoon had even started.
Sorry for waffling, you'd like my tips I suppose. I'm going to stick my Tour De France and F! tips on here as I can't be monkeyed to go and write another blog.
