Friday 8th July - Newmarket Festival Day 2

A couple of gratuitous schoolboy errors yesterday cost me a profit. Firstly, I went in on every Newmarket race when I only wanted to really get involved in about 3 of them! No-ones fault but my own. Secondly I backed Mickael Barzalona to ride a quick double, unfortunately it was 2 races too early as he let me down on my two then promptly won the next 2 races at 9/1 and 12/1. Great! I did get a couple of winners however and managed to take a horse into the notebook which will no doubt be overpriced next time, so we move on.

FEATURE - FALMOUTH STAKES 300 NEWMARKET
Antara - Has to command respect having won a group 3 at the Epsom meeting last month.
First City - Finished second to Antara in said group 3, then 3rd in the Winsdor Forest.
I'm a dreamer - Very disappointing at Ascot after landing an impressive win here in May. Does not want any rain at all.
Lily of the Valley - Has to command respect, out of Gallileo, won group races on ground ranging from good all the way to soft, albeit in France.
River Jetez - No doubt a class horse on international form, unsure as to whether the drop in trip will suit.
Sahpresa - Twice winner of the chariot stakes over course and distance. That trumps any of these for experience. Massive shout and true favourite.
Timepiece - Has shown twice that she is way off group level. I think her calling is fillies listed events over a longer trip than this. Wouldn't be happy in the slightest allowing Tom Quealley to carry my cash here.
JOVIALITY - It's a big risk, I know, but 3 year olds have a terrific record in this race. I don't think she gave her best argument at Ascot and wasn't happy with the cut in the ground. Will like the firmer ground here, providing no substantial rain. Mr Gosden is in decent nick at present and Will Buick is a future champion on board.
Maqaasid - Seems to be the nearly horse of late. Not a fan of the jockey, couldn't back with confidence, but on consistency an each way chance.
Masaya - Big step up for a horse whose biggest win is a class 2 handicap. Out of depth here.
Memory - Since impressively landing the Albany and Cherry Hinton last year she has really not been the same horse. Her refusal to race in the 1000 guineas will cast doubt over her temperament every time she races, and she never gave much account of herself at Royal Ascot. However, she may have needed that run?

NAP OIL STRIKE 400 Ascot
Well weighted, below last winning mark, and handy running style should help him recover from a bad draw. For me the best horse in the race, if he wins you get paid, if he puts in a bold effort from a shocking draw you get a notebook horse. Happy days.

NB KARDLY'S HOPE 605 Gowran Park
3lb lower than last winning mark, her bad form is better than most of her rivals bad form. Massively overpriced in this race, with 15 bad runners, anything above 16/1 is overpriced for me.

TREBLE LOKI'S REVENGE 150 Newmarket
100% record at the track, 50% over the distance, 25% on turf, 33% all starts, in frame 75% of efforts. Had a little lay off, but when last seen, beat the favourite, Steps, when handing him 7lb, this time he takes 4lb from the same runner, so he is better off 11lb!!!! against the favourite. And Fred Done wants to give me 25/1. Fill your boots!!!!!!
